Gangamai Becomes First Maharashtra Sugar Mill to Use AI & Satellite Tech
Gangamai Sugar Mill, in association with Mahindra & Mahindra, has become the first private sugar mill in Maharashtra to use artificial intelligence (AI) and remote sensing technology for the planning of sugarcane harvesting. Their expertise in advanced agricultural technologies has made this innovative initiative possible.
AI Sugarcane Harvesting Begins in Maharashtra
The association marks a milestone in sustainable agronomy for the sugar sector in India, gifting the farmers an innovative toolkit for improved productivity and profitability. This project benefited from and was enabled by a trailblazing solution for sugarcane monitoring and analysis through satellite imaging and AI technology developed by Mahindra & Mahindra. The Gangamai project was originally intended to revolve around an existing 200-acre field.
AI + Satellite Tech Transform Sugarcane Harvesting
It uses multispectral satellite data to evaluate the sugarcane crops‘ vegetation index, considering weather conditions. An AI model then uses this data to predict the sugar recovery rate, with 95% accuracy, validated every week in Gangamai’s laboratory. This detailed planning has led to a notable increase in sugar recovery and lowered operational costs. Also, on an experimental basis, satellite technology was used to monitor 1,500 farmers’ fields for pest infestations and water stress. This allows for early warning signs, empowering farmers to take preventive actions to continue improving yields.

AI Total Crushing: More than 880,000 metric tons of sugarcane had been crushed with a sugar recovery of more than 10 percent.
Enhanced Sugar Recovery: Year-on-Year Surge in Performance.
Satellite-Based Monitoring: This is used to provide early alerts to farmers on potential crop-related pests and diseases.
Over and above technological advancements, Gangamai Industries has organized farmer awareness programs to achieve better sugar recovery and higher Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) realization for the farmer.
Mahindra’s AI Tools Boost Sugarcane Yields at Gangamai Sugar Mill
Having partnered with multiple sugarcane mills for over 4 years, Mahindra is also the first to bring about AI-based harvesting in India for revolutionizing the method of sugarcane harvesting. Mahindra combines precision farming with spectrometry and satellite imaging to accurately quantify sugar content in its sugarcane crop. Using the AI-based programming algorithms, it analyzes photosynthetic attributes that are present in the crop leaves to determine the maturity of that crop and the best time to harvest it, because by doing so, it not only increases the sugar content in the plants, which in turn improves the farmer’s revenues.
