Grow Ragi, Grow Your Income 5 Times!
During the Kharif season, farmers predominantly cultivate paddy. However, if farmers switch from paddy to coarse grains, they can earn a good profit from Ragi cultivation. Compared to paddy, coarse grains are more beneficial for health. According to agricultural scientists, by cultivating finger millet (Ragi), farmers can now earn five times the profit. Finger millet contains a higher amount of nutrients, which is also beneficial for health. If you check the online selling platforms, the price of one kilogram of finger millet ranges from 250 to 300 rupees. By cultivating it, farmers can earn five times the profit.

Invest 10,000 and Earn 50,000
To cultivate finger millet, prepare the field well. Then, select good seeds and sow them at the rate of 6 kilograms per acre using the broadcasting method or behind a plough. You can also use the transplanting method like paddy, which increases production. The cost for cultivating one acre of finger millet is approximately 10,000 rupees, while the profit can be up to 50,000 rupees. The yield per acre is 8 to 10 quintals. The cultivation period is 130 days.
How to Prepare the Field
To prepare the field, first, plough it well twice. Then, level the land using a plank. Sow the seeds using the broadcasting method or behind a plough. Use chemical fertilizers at the rate of 40 kilograms of nitrogen, 30 kilograms of phosphorus, and 20 kilograms of potash per hectare. This increases the yield.
Govt. Support
The Indian government, along with various international bodies, has been promoting the cultivation of millet crops, including finger millet, as part of their strategies to enhance sustainable agriculture and improve farmers’ livelihoods. Efforts are being made to provide farmers with high-quality seeds, training on modern agricultural practices, and access to better markets.
In addition to its health benefits, ragi is also valued for its versatility in cooking. It can be used to make a variety of dishes such as ragi Mudde (a traditional dish in Karnataka), ragi roti, and even ragi-based sweets. The rising consumer awareness and demand for healthier food options have further boosted the market for ragi, making it a lucrative crop for farmers.
