The Union Agriculture Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, emphasized the government’s commitment to farmers’ welfare, noting that the steady rise in MSP for crops like wheat, barley, gram, lentils, rapeseed, mustard, and safflower reflects the Modi government’s priority to ensure fair prices for farmers.
Key Crops See Significant Hike
Among the crops, rapeseed and mustard saw the highest increase, with the MSP rising by ₹300 per quintal to ₹5,950. Lentil (masur) will now be sold at ₹6,700 per quintal, marking a ₹275 increase. Other crops like gram, safflower, and barley also saw increases of ₹210, ₹140, and ₹130 per quintal, respectively.
Breakdown of MSP Increases
Crop | MSP 2025-26 (₹/quintal) | Cost of Production (₹/quintal) | MSP 2024-25 (₹/quintal) | Increase in MSP (₹/quintal) | Margin Over Cost (%) |
Wheat | 2,425 | 1,182 | 2,275 | 150 | 105% |
Barley | 1,980 | 1,239 | 1,850 | 130 | 60% |
Gram | 5,650 | 3,527 | 5,440 | 210 | 60% |
Lentil (Masur) | 6,700 | 3,537 | 6,425 | 275 | 89% |
Rapeseed & Mustard | 5,950 | 3,011 | 5,650 | 300 | 98% |
Safflower | 5,940 | 3,960 | 5,800 | 140 | 50% |
This move aligns with the Union Budget 2018-19 announcement, which pledged to fix MSP at 1.5 times the all-India weighted average cost of production. The government also shared expected margins, with wheat farmers enjoying a 105% margin over production costs, followed by 98% for rapeseed and mustard, 89% for lentils, and around 50-60% for other rabi crops like gram, safflower, and barley.
By increasing the MSP, the government aims to provide fair prices for farmers and encourage crop diversification, ensuring greater economic stability for the agricultural sector. The decision comes at a time when the agricultural sector is recovering from the challenges posed by erratic weather patterns, including unseasonal rains and droughts in various parts of India. The increase in MSP is seen as a measure to provide financial stability to farmers who faced difficulties during the last Kharif season. Experts believe this move will help ensure food security by incentivizing farmers to cultivate essential crops.
Recent discussions also focus on the international wheat market, where rising prices have prompted concerns over food inflation. India, being one of the world’s largest wheat producers, is expected to stabilize its domestic supply with this higher MSP. Additionally, the government continues to explore initiatives like direct benefit transfers and enhanced access to crop insurance schemes, further aiming to secure the livelihood of the farming community in the upcoming season.
