Harvesters automate the process of crop harvesting, significantly increasing the speed and efficiency of operations compared to manual harvesting methods. This allows farmers to harvest larger areas of land in a shorter amount of time, improving productivity, reducing wastage, reducing labour costs and helps in retaining the nutrients of the harvests.
Farmers in India predominantly use harvesters for harvesting paddy, wheat, maize, and sugarcane. But in developed countries, farmers have embraced mechanization extensively especially harvesters which are often equipped with advanced technology such as GPS, sensors and automated systems to optimize efficiency and productivity.
In the international markets, we can find a mix of traditional & high tech/diverse range of harvesters catering to various agricultural needs with large scale operation. Let us see some common types:
Forage harvesters :
Primarily used for harvesting forage crops like maize(corn) and grass for silage, which is commonly used as animal feed.

Cotton harvesters :
The introduction of cotton harvesters has dramatically transformed cotton farming, significantly affecting the lives of end users. Traditionally, hand-picking cotton is a labor-intensive and time-consuming task. However, automated cotton harvesting has become the standard in developed cotton-producing nations like Egypt, the US, and the former USSR.
Continuous manual labor in cotton fields often results in workers suffering from scratches, bruises, and potential pesticide poisoning. As a result, mechanizing cotton picking is crucial for the future.
Specifically designed for harvesting cotton crops, these machines efficiently pick cotton bolls from plants.

Cabbage harvester :
The cabbage harvester is designed to handle the vegetable gently, gripping it from the side to safeguard the delicate top. A specialized blade then trims away the outer leaves and roots beneath the holding clamps. The discarded outer leaves and roots are left behind on the field.
Cabbage harvester will replace about 15 manpower.

Radhish Harvester :
Bunching radishes is a labor-intensive and physically demanding task. The fully automatic radish harvesting machine harvests radish with the same quality as hand-bunched radish in a completely automatic manner. The machine allows radishes to be packaged efficiently while maintaining a good posture, saving significant time and effort. It can bunch approximately 4,000 radishes per hour, reducing the growing time and lowering the labor costs associated with bunching.

Increasingly Indian farmers are expected to adopt range of harvester depending upon their cultivation in the coming years.
