The ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) based at New Delhi has launched the unique Nutri Garden Initiative, a transformative project aimed at empowering farmer women by establishing Nutri Gardens in villages. This initiative is part of the larger NARI (Nutri-Sensitive Agricultural Resources and Innovations) project, which seeks to promote family farms for enhanced family nutrition through skill development and the promotion of dietary diversity among women.

Several regions across states in India faces significant challenges with female anaemia, largely due to dietary deficiencies. The Nutri Garden Initiative is designed to address this issue by encouraging the cultivation and consumption of nutritious crops. Through the dedicated efforts of ICAR-KVK, 30 Nutri Gardens have been established this week at West Garo Hills, Meghalaya to improve family health in this north eastern region by providing a source of iron-rich and diverse vegetables.
Training Program on Scientific Nursery Management
As part of the initiative, a training program on ‘Scientific Nursery Management in Vegetable Crop’ will be conducted on regular basis. Experts from ICAR-KVK led the program, providing farm women with valuable knowledge and skills. The program included a method demonstration on using organic micronutrients, such as Arka Vegetable Special, to enhance plant growth and yield.

As part of the knowledge sharing, 5 SRLMs namely Odisha, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir presented their best practices and showcased their work towards establishment of Agri Nutri Gardens. Women farmers across the states admitted that now less money is being spent towards medical expenses as they were able to get nutritious and chemical free food which they have grown themselves in their own Agri-Nutri Gardens.
Monitored by KVK scientists
In addition, micronutrients and vegetable seeds, including okra, cowpea, and ridge gourd, were distributed to the farm women. These seeds were sourced from IIHR, Bengaluru, one of India’s leading research institutes in horticultural crops. The progress of the Nutri Gardens is being closely monitored by KVK scientists, who collect feedback to ensure the initiative’s success.
Impact on the Community
The Nutri Garden Initiative is not only a step toward improving nutritional health but also a means to empower women in the region. By providing women with the skills and resources needed to grow nutrient-rich crops, the program fosters self-reliance and economic independence. This empowerment extends beyond just nutritional benefits, as women who participate in the program gain confidence and leadership skills that can be applied to other areas of their lives.
Enhance food security and nutrition
The promotion of Nutri Gardens is part of a broader strategy to enhance food security and nutrition in rural communities. By focusing on women, who are often the primary caregivers and food providers in families, these initiatives aim to create sustainable changes in dietary habits and health outcomes.
Furthermore, the initiative supports the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 2, which aims to end hunger, achieve food security, and promote sustainable agriculture. By empowering women farmers and promoting diverse and nutritious diets, the Nutri Garden Initiative contributes to these global objectives.
The Nutri Garden Initiative is expected to serve as a model for other regions facing similar challenges, demonstrating the power of community-driven solutions in tackling nutritional deficiencies and promoting sustainable agriculture. Through continued support and collaboration, initiatives like this have the potential to make a lasting impact on the health and well-being of communities across India.
