A top official from the union agriculture ministry stated on Saturday that it should boost maize, mustard, and moong growing in order to increase farmers’ income and attain self-sufficiency in edible oils. 

A K Singh, the Deputy Director General (Agriculture Extension) of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Government of India’s Agriculture Commissioner, has also spoken in favor of the usage of drones in the agricultural industry.

He was speaking at a consultation event titled “Emerging Challenges in Plant Protection of Major Kharif Crops,” which was put on by the Dhanuka Group, an agrochemical company.

“Crop diversity needs to be actively encouraged. Instead of wheat and rice, the cultivation of the 3Ms—corn, moong, and mustard—should be encouraged since it may help the country attain self-sufficiency and at the same time aid to enhance farmer income.” Singh was reported as saying in a statement.

India imports over 60% of its domestic food needs. Pulses are also imported, albeit in modest amounts.

Singh also underlined the need of utilising modern technologies and exhorted agricultural research institutions to quickly develop drone usage standards.

In order for farmers to adopt a contingency plan, Singh added, “we also need to have one for diverse crops far in advance.”

The consultative gathering featured politicians, businesspeople, farmers, and a number of eminent agricultural scientists from 33 Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVKs) and scientists from ICAR.

The Dhanuka Group’s chairman, RG Agarwal, underlined the value of adopting cutting-edge technology, premium agri-inputs, and “Integrated Crop Management” techniques.

“Along the lines of Integrated Pest Management, we might think about establishing “Integrated Crop Management” as a practice. This will help address significant difficulties pertaining to diverse crops farmed around the country. The agriculture industry is rapidly adopting drones and other forms of technology because, he continued, “Technology must play a key role in it.”

“Unfortunately, the agrochemical segment of the Indian agricultural input market is dominated by the lower quality and inferior goods. It is crucial to address the problem of inferior agri-inputs as soon as possible, according to “Agarwal,” in order to meet the government’s lofty aim of doubling farmers’ income.

Rajbir Singh, Director of the ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, claims that this is the first time a national-level consultative gathering has been planned in conjunction with the business sector (ATARI). Singh expressed the hope that the meeting’s recommendations will help farmers get rid of pests and different crop diseases.

According to Subhash Chander, Director of ICAR-NCIPM, “Farmers will substantially benefit from embracing integrated pest management techniques, and it needs to be adopted integrated pest management techniques and it needs to be applied holistically.”
