In order to double farmers’ income in time for the International Year of Millets in 2023, the ICAR-Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) in Hyderabad is assisting in the marketing of millets through FPOs.

In the presence of Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, former director of the ICAR-IIMR and president of Rotary Club Krishi Rajendranagar, Raghu, general manager of Nabhitha Engineering Private Ltd., and other members of the Rotary club, Dr. C. V. Ratnavathi, director of the ICAR-IIMR, inaugurated the unit. In order to implement its “Millets FPO Model,” IIMR is functioning as a Cluster Based Business Organization (CBBO) for the development and support of 33 millets Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana.

On the eve of Independence Day and Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, the institute developed a millet-processing unit to offer millet growers and FPOs a processing facility. Additionally, it inked an MOU with the Rotary Club of Krishi Rajendranagar and Nabhitha Engineering Private Ltd. to establish the primary processing plant on the grounds of ICAR-IIMR.

Through their enhanced grains, the ICAR-IIMR primary processing unit provides millet growers with improved marketing connections so they may obtain fair pricing for their products. Additionally, it will give farmers and FPOs practical training on millets’ value addition.
