In a significant step towards environmental sustainability, the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare is set to establish a “Matri Van” (मातृ व्हॅन) on approximately 1 acre of land at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) campus in Pusa, New Delhi. This initiative is part of the broader #एक_पेड़_मां_के_नाम (#Plant4Mother) campaign, which was launched by the Prime Minister of India on World Environment Day 2024.

Global Campaign for Tree Planting
The #Plant4Mother campaign aims to honour mothers and Mother Earth by encouraging mass tree planting across the nation. The Ministry of Environment, Forest & Climate Change has announced ambitious targets to plant 80 crore saplings by September 2024 and 140 crore saplings by March 2025. The campaign began with a tree plantation drive at Asola Bhati Wildlife Sanctuary, where individuals planted trees in their mothers’ names.
Matri Van: A Tribute to Mothers
In the presence of Hon’ble Agriculture Minister of India, the agriculture and farmer welfare Ministry of India kicked off the #एक_पेड़_मां_के_नाम (#Plant4Mother) campaign by planting saplings in the newly established Matri Van at the IARI campus. Around 200 officers and staff from the Ministry joined the Union Agriculture Minister in this noble endeavour, with simultaneous tree plantation programs expected to take place across over 800 institutions under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare nationwide. During these events, approximately 3,000-4,000 saplings will be planted.
Expanding the Campaign Nationwide
In addition to the Matri Van initiative, the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare is collaborating with various state governments and local bodies to expand the reach of the #Plant4Mother campaign. Educational institutions, including schools and universities, have been encouraged to participate by organizing tree-planting events on their campuses. This widespread involvement aims to create a deeper connection between communities and the environment, emphasizing the importance of trees in combating climate change and enhancing biodiversity.
Furthermore, the Ministry is exploring partnerships with private sector companies under their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives to provide financial and logistical support for the campaign. These collaborations are expected to boost the campaign’s impact, ensuring that more saplings are planted and cared for across urban and rural areas alike.
A Movement Towards Sustainable Agriculture
The #Plant4Mother campaign is not just about planting trees; it’s about fostering a deeper connection between people, their mothers, and the environment. The initiative also aligns with the Government’s Mission LiFE, a mass movement promoting an environmentally conscious lifestyle.
In agriculture, planting trees plays a crucial role in sustainable farming practices. Trees enhance farm productivity by improving soil quality, water retention, and biodiversity. Additionally, they offer farmers an extra source of income through timber and non-timber products. The campaign has the potential to prevent and reverse land degradation and desertification, making it a vital step toward a greener and more sustainable future for India.
Long-Term Vision
The long-term vision of the #Plant4Mother campaign extends beyond merely planting saplings. The Ministry has laid out plans for nurturing these trees to maturity, ensuring that they contribute to the ecosystem for years to come. Monitoring and maintenance programs are being set up at local levels to safeguard the survival of these saplings, with community participation being a key element of this process.
