Shivni, Maharashtra – In a small village facing constant water scarcity, 64-year-old Uddhav Asaram Khedekar has transformed the arid landscape into a model for sustainable farming. Despite limited resources, this farmer has built a successful agricultural enterprise that earns him an impressive annual income of Rs. 30-40 lakh, while also becoming a beacon of hope and inspiration for other farmers in the region. 

From Math Graduate to Master Farmer 

Though Uddhav holds a degree in mathematics, his heart has always been in farming. Right after completing his studies, he made the bold decision to pursue a career in agriculture rather than mathematics. Over the past 40 years, Uddhav has become a highly respected expert in growing cotton, soybean, and onion, proving that passion and dedication can turn even the most difficult circumstances into an opportunity. 

Thriving with Cotton in a Water-Scarce Region 

Uddhav’s village of Shivni receives just 500-550 mm of rainfall annually, creating a major challenge for local farmers. Recognizing the need to adapt to these dry conditions, Uddhav chose to cultivate cotton, a crop that requires significantly less water compared to others. “Water is scarce here, and cotton needs less water to grow, which is why I chose it,” he explains. 

He now dedicates 15-20 acres of his land to cotton farming, while also growing soybean and onion to diversify his crop production and secure his income. His decision to grow these crops has paid off, with his cotton yield alone contributing approximately 150 quintals annually, earning him around Rs. 10 lakh. 

Pioneering Sustainable Farming Practices 

A firm believer in sustainable agriculture, Uddhav has committed to using eco-friendly methods to maintain the health of his fields. By adopting Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Integrated Nutrient Management (INM), he minimizes the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. “I use organic techniques as much as possible. I only use chemicals when absolutely necessary, and in small amounts,” he says. 

To combat pests, Uddhav employs natural solutions like biological pest control and sticky traps. Chemicals are only used as a last resort when pest infestations become too severe. This approach not only ensures a healthier yield but also reduces the environmental impact on the land. 

Award-Winning Water Conservation Efforts 

Uddhav’s ability to adapt to the region’s water limitations has earned him national recognition. Despite the hilly terrain of his village, which causes much of the rainfall to run off, Uddhav has developed innovative ways to conserve water. His efforts were recognized with two prestigious national awards – the ICAR-Babu Jagjivan Ram Innovative Farmer Award for Water Conservation and the N.G. Ranga Farmer Award for Diversified Agriculture. 

Export to other states 

In addition to cotton, Uddhav grows soybean and onion, further boosting his income. By exporting his onions to states like Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar, he has diversified his market and increased profitability. His annual earnings from the three crops range between Rs. 30-40 lakh, a remarkable feat in a region that struggles with water shortages. 

A Mentor and Leader in the Farming Community 

Despite his success, Uddhav remains humble and dedicated to helping his fellow farmers. He is always available to provide advice and is an active member of the Keshavraj Agro Producer Company Ltd. “I believe we are all students of life. No matter how much we know, there is always more to learn,” he says.
