Why Lohri is Close to Every Farmer’s Heart

Around the fire, farmers are sitting with their woman and neighbors, mud, where fire can not only give warmth but also symbolize richness. The bonfire is decorated with sesame seeds, jaggery, peanuts, and popcorn, which is thrown into the fire in homage to Agni, the fire god.
- After: Folk songs like “Sundar Mundriye” are heard, while people dance the popular Punjabi folk dances of Bhangra and Gidda. Exciting for any audience because the beating of the dhol brings about a sense of togetherness among the community.
- Harvesting, Cooking, and Sharing Together: Farmers and their families provide a variety of dishes made from farm-fresh produce. Cornflat bread called Makki di roti served with mustard greens called sarson da saag are staples, also sweets such as rewri, gajak and til ke laddoo.
- Importance of Community: Lohri is not only a family festival; it is a festival to bond with the community as well. Farmers invite friends and close family members to celebrate with them, exchanging sweets and good wishes for a bountiful year ahead.
