Uttar Pradesh Farmer Finds Success with AI in Beekeeping
Ajit Kumar, a young farmer from Uttar Pradesh, has developed an innovative method to increase honey production by 30-35% using artificial insemination (AI) techniques. His breakthrough in beekeeping not only enhances honey output but also improves its quality, potentially offering new income opportunities for farmers across the country.
AI Technology Brings New Hope for Beekeeping
While artificial insemination is widely used in dairy farming to improve livestock, Ajit Kumar applied this concept to bees. His method involves selecting high-quality bee colonies and breeding stronger, more productive queen bees through AI. Kumar claims this process can increase honey production in each hive by up to 35%. This innovation has the potential to revolutionize India’s honey industry if adopted on a large scale.
Three-Step Process for Improving Bee Productivity
Ajit Kumar’s AI-based method works in three stages. First, larvae from the most productive bee colonies are selected. Then, artificial insemination is used to create high-quality queen bees. Finally, older queens in the hive are replaced with these new, healthier queens, encouraging the colony to produce more honey and become more resilient.

Farmers See Production Increase by 30%
Farmers who have implemented this AI technique have reported significant results. Previously, honey production ranged from 25-28 kg per hive. Now, with Kumar’s method, farmers are seeing up to 35-36 kg per hive—a 30-35% increase. This innovation not only boosts output but also helps maintain genetic diversity in bee colonies, improving their resistance to disease and ensuring long-term sustainability.
Innovation Born Out of the Pandemic
Ajit Kumar began his beekeeping journey at the age of 16 with just five hives and has since grown his operation to nearly 2,000 hives. During the COVID-19 pandemic, his honey production took a hit, which inspired him to explore new techniques. In 2021, he reached out to beekeepers in the U.S. and China for training and eventually developed his own AI-based method. By 2022, he had established India’s first artificial queen insemination lab, producing up to 200 tons of honey annually.
Recognised for His Achievements
In recognition of his outstanding work, Ajit Kumar was honoured by the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Anandiben Patel. During a meeting at Raj Bhavan, the Governor praised Kumar’s innovation, noting its potential to elevate India’s honey production from the current 62,000 tons to match China’s 458,000 tons. Kumar believes that with government support, India could become a global leader in honey production, providing significant economic benefits to farmers and boosting exports.
The Future of Indian Beekeeping
Ajit Kumar’s AI-based technique has opened the door to a more productive and sustainable beekeeping industry in India. With potential support from the government and agricultural institutions, his method could help farmers increase their incomes, improve honey quality, and make India a major player in the global honey market.
