Tomato Production Sees a Notable Increase
One of the significant highlights of the report is the increase in tomato production. In 2023-24, tomato production is estimated to reach 213.20 lakh tonnes, compared to 204.25 lakh tonnes in the previous year. This marks an increase of 4.38%, driven by favorable climatic conditions and improved farming practices.
Fruit Production on the Rise
The production of fruits in 2023-24 is projected to grow by 2.29%, reaching 112.73 million tonnes. This increase is primarily attributed to a higher yield in fruits such as mango, banana, lime/lemon, grapes, and custard apple. However, the production of certain fruits, including apple, sweet orange, mandarin, guava, litchi, pomegranate, and pineapple, is expected to decline compared to the 2022-23 final estimates.
Mixed Trends in Vegetable Production
Vegetable production is anticipated to remain at 205.80 million tonnes in 2023-24, with a mixed trend observed across different crops. Notable increases are expected in the production of tomato, cabbage, cauliflower, tapioca, and other vegetables such as bottle gourd, pumpkin, carrot, cucumber, and bitter gourd. Conversely, a decrease in production is forecasted for potato, onion, brinjal, capsicum, and elephant foot yam.
Onion and Potato Production Fluctuations
The production of onion is estimated to be 242.44 lakh tonnes in 2023-24, a stable output compared to previous years. However, potato production is expected to see a decline, with estimates at 570.49 lakh tonnes. This reduction is primarily due to lower production levels reported in key states like Bihar and West Bengal.
Growth in Honey, Flowers, and Other Crops
Aside from fruits and vegetables, the report indicates an increase in the production of other horticultural crops, such as honey, flowers, plantation crops, spices, and aromatic & medicinal plants. These categories have witnessed steady growth, contributing to the overall resilience of the horticultural sector in India.
The Third Advance Estimates for 2023-24 provide a comprehensive overview of the horticultural sector’s performance in India. While certain crops like tomatoes and fruits show promising growth, other key staples such as potatoes and specific fruits are expected to see a decline in production. The data underscores the need for continued efforts in research, improved farming techniques, and climate resilience to support India’s growing horticulture sector.
With an overall production of 353.19 million tonnes, horticulture remains a vital component of India’s agricultural landscape, contributing significantly to the economy and food security.
