In a significant move to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability, the central government is promoting the use of nano urea and nano diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilizers. As part of this effort, six nano urea and four nano DAP projects have been established across the country, aiming to produce 26.62 crore bottles of nano urea and 10.74 crore bottles of nano DAP annually. These initiatives are set to revolutionize the fertilizer industry, offering a more efficient alternative to traditional fertilizers.
Encouraging Indigenous Production
The Department of Fertilizers has encouraged public sector undertakings like National Fertilizers Limited and Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers Limited to set up nano urea plants. This move is aligned with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India) initiative, promoting self-sufficiency in fertilizer production. The indigenous production projects are located in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, with IFFCO playing a key role in the production process. At Kalol in Gujarat, nano urea is being produced in collaboration with IFFCO, while additional projects are set up in Phulpur and Amla, Uttar Pradesh. Collectively, these projects have a production capacity of 17 crore bottles of 500 ml each.
Promoting Nano Fertilizers Across India
Over the past few years, the government has intensified efforts to promote the use of nano fertilizers through various activities. The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has organized camps, webinars, street plays, demonstrations, and farmer meetings in regional languages to raise awareness about the benefits of nano urea. Additionally, the ‘Namo Drone Didi’ scheme has been launched to provide drones to 15,000 women’s self-help groups. This initiative has seen 1,094 drones being made available to these groups, facilitating the application of nano fertilizers through drone technology.
Testing and Efficacy
In 2021, extensive testing of nano urea was conducted on 43 crops across 20 ICARs, agricultural universities, and agricultural science centres in India. This was expanded to 94 crops to evaluate its efficacy nationwide. The results showed an 8% increase in crop growth due to nano urea application, highlighting its potential to improve crop yields and soil quality.
Environmental Benefits and Economic Growth
Nano urea is proving to be effective in reducing global warming by minimizing the environmental impact of traditional fertilizers. It also helps improve soil water quality, leading to healthier crops. The increased efficiency and availability of micronutrients through nano urea contribute to better crop quality and yield, thus enhancing farmers’ income and promoting sustainable agriculture.
Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers, Anupriya Patel, stated, “All efforts are being made on behalf of the Centre to reduce dependence on conventional fertilizers in the future. These projects are being built under this initiative.”
Global Trends in Nano Fertilizers
The adoption of nano fertilizers is part of a global trend towards sustainable agricultural practices. Countries like the United States, China, and Brazil are investing in research and development of nano-based fertilizers to improve crop productivity while reducing environmental impact. Recent studies have shown that nano fertilizers can enhance nutrient absorption in plants, leading to more robust growth and higher yields. They are also known to reduce the leaching of nutrients into the soil, thereby preserving soil health and preventing water pollution.
As the demand for sustainable agriculture grows, the global market for nano fertilizers is expected to expand significantly. According to market research, the nano fertilizers market is projected to reach USD 3.26 billion by 2025, driven by increased awareness of the benefits of nano fertilizers and the growing need for efficient agricultural practices.
