Farmers in Madhya Pradesh, particularly those in the Mandsaur parliamentary constituency, are raising concerns over the increasing presence of illegal Chinese garlic in the markets. Sudhir Gupta, the Member of Parliament for Mandsaur, recently held discussions with district officials from Mandsaur, Neemuch, and Ratlam, urging them to take serious action against the import of substandard Chinese garlic and protect local agricultural production. 

A Threat to Local Garlic Farmers 

Mandsaur, a major hub for garlic production in India, exports large quantities of garlic not just to various parts of the country but also internationally. However, the arrival of low-quality Chinese garlic is now posing a serious threat to this industry. MP Sudhir Gupta expressed deep concern over this issue, emphasizing the significant impact it could have not only on the agricultural output but also on local businesses and traders. “Our constituency leads in garlic production, and the infiltration of substandard Chinese garlic is a grave concern for both farmers and traders,” Gupta stated. 

Gupta also highlighted that the Indian government, under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, has been actively supporting Indian farmers and promoting garlic exports. As a result, India saw a record 245% increase in garlic exports in 2023, reaching $30 million. The Mandsaur parliamentary constituency played a key role in this growth. However, Gupta warned that if illegal Chinese garlic continues to flood the markets, this progress could be undermined.

Government Action and Vigilance 

MP Sudhir Gupta urged local authorities, including the Food Department, Agricultural Produce Market Committees (Krishi Upaj Mandi Samitis), and the police administration, to remain vigilant. He stressed the need for stricter monitoring at the points of sale and purchase, ensuring that substandard garlic is seized and destroyed. Gupta also called for severe penalties for those involved in importing and selling illegal Chinese garlic. 

He proposed installing flex boards at various marketplaces to help consumers identify the differences between substandard Chinese garlic and the high-quality, locally grown Indian garlic. Educating the public about these distinctions, he noted, would be an important step in safeguarding both consumers and the local garlic industry. 

Health Concerns and Chemical Usage 

One of the most alarming issues raised by Gupta is the potential health hazards associated with Chinese garlic. He accused China of using harmful chemicals like metal, lead, and chlorine in the production of garlic to boost output. This, he claimed, poses significant health risks, including liver and kidney damage and digestive system disorders. “Excessive use of harmful chemicals in fruits and vegetables can lead to fatal diseases, and this is something we cannot allow,” Gupta remarked. 

In contrast, Gupta highlighted that Indian farmers do not resort to such dangerous practices, which has earned Indian garlic the trust of international markets. He referenced a recent letter from a U.S. senator, which raised concerns about the safety of garlic grown abroad, particularly in China. This letter underscores the global concern over food safety and the critical importance of supporting the production of high-quality, chemical-free garlic in India.

He urged them to collaborate closely with law enforcement, the food department, and agricultural bodies to curb the illegal influx of Chinese garlic.
