Oilseeds, Pulses & Soyabean sees a bloom
According to recent data from the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, the acreage for pulses and oilseeds has surged by more than 50% compared to the same period last year. Pulses have been sown in 36.81 lakh hectares, a significant increase from 23.78 lakh hectares at this time last year.

The sowing of ‘Arhar’ has seen a remarkable rise, growing nearly four times from 4.09 lakh hectares to 20.82 lakh hectares. A similar trend is observed in soybean cultivation. Last year, soybean was sown in 28.86 lakh hectares during this week, but this year it has doubled, reaching 60.63 lakh hectares.
This increase in sowing acreage can be attributed to the rise in minimum support prices (MSP) and the timely arrival of the monsoon across India. The higher MSP has incentivized farmers to dedicate more land to these crops, while favourable weather conditions have further supported their efforts.
Millets Fail to Attract Farmers
Despite a significant increase in the minimum support prices for millets, these crops have not attracted as many farmers. Many farmers struggle to find the right market or sell their produce at the support prices. As a result, the area dedicated to millets has dropped by about 80% compared to last year, now covering only 17 lakh hectares.
Cotton Shows Significant Growth
Cotton cultivation has shown impressive growth, with the sown area reaching 80.63 lakh hectares, a 29% increase from 62.34 lakh hectares during the same period last year.
Overall, the total area under Kharif crops has expanded to 378 lakh hectares, reflecting a 14% increase compared to the corresponding week last year.

lack of efficient market access
The increased acreage for pulses and oilseeds is a positive development for India’s agricultural sector, as it aims to reduce dependency on imports and enhance self-sufficiency in these essential crops. The government’s focus on improving MSPs and ensuring timely monsoon support is part of a broader strategy to boost agricultural productivity and farmer incomes.
However, the struggles faced by millet farmers highlight the challenges within the agricultural market. Despite higher MSPs, the lack of efficient market access and the inability to sell at support prices discourage farmers from growing millets. This underscores the need for better market infrastructure and support systems to ensure that farmers can benefit from government policies.
The overall increase in Kharif crop acreage indicates a positive trend in the agricultural sector, driven by supportive policies and favourable weather conditions. As the season progresses, it will be important to monitor the crop yields and market conditions to ensure that the benefits of increased acreage translate into tangible gains for farmers and the economy. In conclusion, while the rise in sowing acreage for pulses, oilseeds, and cotton is a promising sign, addressing the challenges faced by millet farmers and ensuring effective market access for all crops will be crucial for sustained agricultural growth and farmer prosperity.
