Early Beginnings: From Business to Farming
Born into a family rooted in business, Nakhat’s path to becoming an agricultural icon was far from typical. After completing his Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) in Kolkata, he returned to his hometown of Thakurganj in 1968. Defying expectations, he shifted from his family’s established business to venture into farming—something he had no formal training in, but a strong passion for.
Initially, Nakhat dabbled in growing Singaporean bananas, experimenting with new varieties. This early innovation laid the foundation for his future success in more exotic crops.
Banana Cultivation in Bihar: A Revolution
In the 1980s and 1990s, Thakurganj became synonymous with banana farming due to Nakhat’s groundbreaking work. He introduced varieties such as Malbhog, Martaban, Jahaji, Rovesta, and red bananas—crops that were previously unknown in the region. His efforts inspired other farmers, who had traditionally focused on jute, paddy, and wheat, to explore more profitable cash crops.
This shift had a profound impact on the local economy, turning Thakurganj into a hub for high-quality banana farming, with produce that was highly sought after in markets across Bihar. Reflecting on that time, Nakhat recalls, “At that time, farmers were primarily growing jute, paddy, and wheat. I saw potential in introducing cash crops, which could bring higher profits.”
A Bold New Step: Shift to Dragon Fruit Farming
After a decade-long break from farming, Nakhat returned to agriculture with a fresh vision in 2014. This time, he chose to cultivate dragon fruit—a crop never before farmed in the region. Starting modestly with 100 plants, Nakhat expanded his operation to over 7 acres, nurturing more than 17,000 plants. His innovative approach not only boosted his personal success but also created a new wave of smart farming across Seemanchal.
Collaborating closely with the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Kishanganj, Nakhat adopted advanced farming techniques, which significantly increased both the productivity and profitability of his farm. Today, his enterprise is flourishing, providing livelihoods to his family and boosting the local economy. His pioneering efforts have attracted farmers from neighboring states eager to learn the art of cultivating this exotic crop.
“Dragon fruit farming was a challenge at first, but I saw its potential. With the help of Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Kishanganj, I adopted modern techniques to ensure success,” Nakhat shares.
Inspiring Others to Embrace Innovation
Nakhat’s journey from banana farming to dragon fruit cultivation showcases the power of innovation in agriculture. His success has had a ripple effect, inspiring farmers across Seemanchal to adopt smart farming methods, helping to create a more sustainable and profitable agricultural future.
