This has resulted in most farmers’ children quitting farming for other vocations. Also, farmers get more money from selling their land to builders, malls and factories than they would ever get from farming. This has put more pressure on farmland, thereby requiring technologies to increase productivity so that the shrinking acreage can feed the billion-plus people of India in the future. India, though one of the biggest producers of agricultural products, has an average farm productivity of only 33 per cent of that of farms the world over. This productivity needs to be increased so that farmers can get more remuneration from the same piece of land — with less labour. • Buoyed with the success of purchase of Bajra through the e-procurement system at Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs 1950 per quintal and payment to farmers directly into their bank accounts, the Haryana chief minister accorded his approval for using the same system for the procurement of moong and potato. • In other words, Rabi crops such as wheat and others face a threat. Even otherwise, it is known that Indian wheat is at the limit of heat tolerance; and even a 2 degrees celsius increase in mean temperature during the growing months of January and February can potentially reduce yields by as much as 20 percent. • In a bid to protect the livestock as a severe drought looms over Maharashtra, the government has decided to extend seeds and fertilisers worth Rs 4,600 per hectare so they can grow fodder large scale and feed their cattle • The state government of Punjab has banned the sale of all formulations containing weedicide Glyphosate, soon after a San Francisco court upheld the weed killer’s role in causing cancer. The chemical, which is broadly used to control wide variety of weeds in almost all the crops in the State, is observed to be group 2A Cancer causing material. • The government has estimated pulses output in this kharif season at 9.22 million tonne and that of oilseeds at 22.2 million tonne. Food Corporation of India and National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) will procure 44 lakh tonne of oilseeds and pulses under the new scheme –– Pradhan Mantri AnnadataAaySanraksHan Abhiyan (PM- AAASHA) –– aimed at ensuring assured and better returns to farmers. Expectations of sustained and strong growth rates in tractor sales following three years of normal rainfall are slowly being deflated. Since June, domestic tractor sales growth has slowed down. Data from Icra Ltd (see chart above) shows a worrisome 12% year-on-year contraction in September sales to 88,820 units. Still, manufacturers and dealers are hopeful that the fall is due to the delayed onset of the festive season in 2018 (most festivals are in the December quarter this year, whereas they normally fall in the September quarter). • Country’s third largest tractor manufacturer International Tractors Ltd on Tuesday announced a joint venture with its long-term associate and distributor FAMAG in the Algerian market. Algeria is one of the key markets for Sonalika where it enjoys close to 80% market share. Sonalika started exporting its tractors to Algeria in 2004 and started its relationship with FAMAG as a distributor. • M&M Domestic sales in October 2018 were at 46,312 units, as against 39,516 units during October 2017. • The company registered growth of 34 per cent in domestic market and 103 per cent in international market, as per the company statement.
