Fisheries Sector Transformation and Growth
PM Modi highlighted the critical role of India’s fishermen in tapping ocean-related opportunities. Reflecting on the sector’s transformation over the past decade, he attributed the success to various government initiatives and the dedication of the fishing community. He proudly stated that India, now the second-largest fish-producing country globally, has seen its fish production more than double from 80 lakh tonnes in 2014 to 170 lakh tonnes today. Similarly, shrimp exports have also surged, surpassing Rs 40,000 crore, compared to less than Rs 20,000 crore a decade ago. PM Modi credited this remarkable growth to the Blue Revolution Scheme, which has generated numerous employment opportunities.
5.25 lakh new employments
Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Rajeev Ranjan Singh, expressed his gratitude to PM Modi at the event. He noted that these new initiatives are expected to create employment for approximately 5.25 lakh people, both directly and indirectly. Singh highlighted the doubling of fish production over the last nine years, from 95.79 lakh tonnes in 2013-14 to 175.45 lakh tonnes in 2022-23. He also pointed out the significant increase in fish exports, which have grown from Rs 30,213 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 60,523 crore currently.
Empowering Women and Strengthening Communication
The Prime Minister also underscored the government’s efforts to boost women’s participation in the fisheries sector. Through the PM Matsya Sampada Yojana, thousands of women have received support, and advanced technologies, including the newly launched Vessel Communication System, are expected to further empower the fishing community. PM Modi announced the government’s plan to install 1 lakh transponders on fishing vessels to ensure uninterrupted connectivity between fishermen, their families, boat owners, fisheries departments, and coast guards. This system, relying on satellite technology, will enable timely communication during emergencies, such as cyclones, and prevent loss of life.
Modernizing Infrastructure and Enhancing Safety
To ensure the safety and efficiency of the fisheries sector, PM Modi informed that over 110 fishing ports and landing centres are being constructed for the safe return of fishermen’s vessels. The government is focusing on the development of coastal villages and strengthening fishermen’s organizations. Initiatives like cold chain processing facilities, loan schemes for boats, and the PM Matsya Sampada Yojana are examples of the comprehensive efforts being made to support the sector.
A Commitment to Marginalized Communities
Addressing the historical neglect of fishermen and tribal communities, PM Modi highlighted that the current government has created separate ministries for their welfare. The Prime Minister remarked on the significant contributions these communities are making toward the nation’s development, supported by initiatives like the PM JanMan Yojana. He contrasted this with previous governments’ policies, which he claimed left these communities marginalized and without dedicated support.
