New doors of opportunity for Indian citrus farmers
India has recently imported the patented ‘Tango’ orange variety, known for its unique taste, size, aroma, colour, and productivity. This significant development is expected to revolutionize citrus farming in the country, particularly in Maharashtra. The initiative was led by Sahyadri Farms, a farmer-producer company that previously successfully introduced patented grape varieties to India. Currently, the ‘Tango’ variety is undergoing a quarantine process. This import marks a crucial moment in Indian horticulture, as it is likely to boost the productivity and income of citrus fruit farmers.

Offers high productivity
The ‘Tango’ orange is a globally renowned variety developed by the University of California. Eurosemillas, a leading agricultural innovation company, holds the global licensing rights for this variety. The ‘Tango’ orange is known for its medium size, easy-to-peel skin, unique taste, balanced acid-sugar ratio, and juiciness. Remarkably, it is nearly seedless, with only 0.2 seeds per 25 fruits, making it highly desirable among consumers. The variety also offers high productivity, with an average yield of 60 tons per hectare. Given its distinctive qualities, the ‘Tango’ orange is expected to have strong market demand, both in India and globally.

The introduction of the ‘Tango’ variety is a significant step towards enhancing the citrus industry in India. Currently, Maharashtra has over 135,000 hectares of land under citrus cultivation, with more than 170,000 farmers engaged in citrus production, yielding an annual production of 1.8 million tons of oranges. The arrival of the ‘Tango’ variety is anticipated to bring about a substantial increase in productivity and income for these farmers, similar to the transformation seen in grape farming in the state.
Reduced import
Sahyadri Farms has played a pivotal role in empowering farmers by providing access to patented, high-quality varieties. The company’s efforts have led to a positive shift in the economic conditions of ordinary farmers and have established a strong reputation for Sahyadri Farms in the global grape market. With the successful completion of the plant quarantine process, the ‘Tango’ variety will be made available to member farmers through Sahyadri Farms-affiliated farmer-producer companies. This initiative is expected to reduce the import of premium fruits and processed citrus products in the country.
New doors of opportunity
The ‘Tango’ variety’s introduction is also seen as a move towards making agriculture more profitable and sustainable for small and marginal farmers. Sahyadri Farms is committed to strengthening the value chain for citrus fruits, enhancing productivity and income for farmers, and establishing a strong presence in the global market. As Maharashtra continues to lead in citrus production, the state is poised to witness a citrus revolution with the introduction of the ‘Tango’ variety. This development is expected to open new doors of opportunity for Indian citrus farmers in the global market, paving the way for significant growth in the citrus industry.
