Subsidy on Solar Pumps to Boost Farming Efficiency
The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a push to encourage farmers to apply for subsidized solar pumps under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM KUSUM) Component C-1 scheme. This initiative aims to reduce farming costs and provide reliable irrigation facilities to farmers, aligning with the broader goals of the PM Kusum Yojana.

As part of the Uttar Pradesh Solar Energy Policy-2022, targets have been set for the distribution of solar pumps ranging from 3 HP to 10 HP during the 2024-25 fiscal year. A total of 10,000 solar pumps will be provided under this program, benefitting farmers across the state. Applications are now being accepted online through the UPNEDA portal (upnedakusumc1.in) on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested farmers must apply and deposit their contribution by December 15, 2024, to avail the subsidy.
Subsidy Details: Significant Savings for Farmers
Anupam Shukla, Director of UPNEDA, outlined the financial benefits of the scheme:
Farmers from Scheduled Tribes, Vantagiya, and Musahar communities are eligible for a 70% state subsidy, in addition to the 30% central subsidy, making the program highly cost-effective.
Other farmers can access a 60% state subsidy, along with the central subsidy, reducing their out-of-pocket expense to only 10% of the total cost.
For example:
- For a 3 HP solar pump, the farmer’s share is ₹23,900.
- For a 5 HP pump, the contribution is ₹39,325.
- For a 7.5 HP pump, it amounts to ₹54,800.
- For a 10 HP pump, the farmer contribution is ₹2,26,750.
These subsidies significantly lower the initial investment, making solar irrigation a viable option for small and marginal farmers.
Application Process: Easy and Accessible
Farmers in Uttar Pradesh can apply online via upnedakusumc1.in. To complete the application, they will need:
- A valid mobile number
- Land ownership documents
- Identity proof
- A copy of their bank passbook
Farmers who previously applied under the scheme but did not complete the payment process can still benefit by depositing the required amount.
Why Solar Pumps?
Solar pumps offer an eco-friendly, cost-efficient alternative to traditional irrigation systems. They reduce dependence on expensive diesel or unreliable electricity, providing a sustainable solution to water management in agriculture. Additionally, these pumps contribute to environmental conservation by lowering carbon emissions.
Government’s Vision: Sustainable Agriculture
The PM KUSUM scheme, launched by the central government, is a flagship program aimed at promoting renewable energy in agriculture. It aligns with India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 while empowering farmers with modern technology. Uttar Pradesh’s adaptation of the scheme reflects its focus on inclusive development, ensuring that marginalized communities can also reap the benefits of this transformative initiative.
Call to Action
Farmers are encouraged to seize this opportunity to modernize their irrigation systems and reduce input costs. With the December 15 deadline fast approaching, timely application and payment are crucial. By leveraging this subsidy, farmers can not only improve their agricultural productivity but also contribute to the nation’s renewable energy goals.
