The National Mission on Edible Oil – Oil Palm (NMEO-OP) was introduced by the Government of India in August 2021 to address the growing demand for edible oil, reduce import dependency, and enhance farmers’ incomes. By building a value chain for the oil palm sector, the mission aims to expand oil palm cultivation and increase domestic Crude Palm Oil (CPO) production. The Mega Oil Palm Plantation Drive is a key component of this strategy and has already shown significant progress in its first phase.

Extensive Participation Across 15 States
The drive, which will continue until September 15, 2024, has seen widespread participation from 15 states, demonstrating a nationwide effort to expand oil palm cultivation. The participating states include Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura. These states have taken active roles in promoting oil palm cultivation by engaging local farmers and encouraging them to adopt this profitable crop.
Farmers in these states have already begun benefiting from the initiative, with over 10,000 farmers directly participating in the plantation activities. The vast scope of the project, covering more than 12,000 hectares, highlights the government’s commitment to achieving self-reliance in edible oil production.
Collaboration with Leading Oil Palm Companies
The success of the Mega Oil Palm Plantation Drive is partly due to the strong collaboration between state governments and leading oil palm processing companies. Prominent companies such as Patanjali Food Pvt. Ltd., Godrej Agrovet, and 3F Oil Palm Ltd. have been actively involved in the drive, providing technical support, resources, and training to farmers. This public-private partnership has proven crucial in scaling up the initiative and ensuring that farmers have the necessary knowledge and tools to grow oil palm successfully.
Several awareness workshops, plantation campaigns, and promotional events have been organized to educate farmers about the benefits of oil palm cultivation. These events have also helped raise awareness about the mission’s broader goals, including reducing India’s reliance on edible oil imports and improving the livelihoods of rural farmers. By participating in these workshops, farmers have gained valuable insights into modern oil palm farming techniques, pest management, and efficient resource utilization.
A Step Toward Self-Reliance and Economic Growth
The NMEO-OP mission is designed to not only expand oil palm cultivation but also create a value chain ecosystem for the development of the oil palm sector. This includes providing viability price support to farmers, ensuring they receive fair compensation for their crops, and addressing market fluctuations that could affect their income.
The Mega Oil Palm Plantation Drive, as a core element of this mission, aims to significantly increase Crude Palm Oil (CPO) production in India. This aligns with the government’s long-term vision of reducing edible oil imports and fostering domestic production. By doing so, India can become more self-reliant in this crucial sector and ensure that farmers are empowered through better economic opportunities.
