The Odisha government has relaunched the State Potato Mission with the goal of reducing the state’s dependency on other regions, particularly West Bengal, for its potato supply. This renewed initiative seeks to boost potato cultivation by expanding the growing area and providing farmers with better incentives and infrastructure, particularly cold storage facilities, to ensure success.

Strategy to Boost Potato Production
Under the new plan, the Odisha government has made significant preparations to ensure the success of the mission this time. According to Food Supply and Consumer Welfare Minister Krishna Chandra Patra, potato cultivation is set to begin in 14,423 hectares during the Rabi season. To support this, the Odisha State Seed Corporation (OSSC) has procured 1.87 lakh quintals of certified potato seeds, with orders placed to traders in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. These seeds will be distributed to farmers across the state starting from October 14.

Cold Storage Facilities: A Critical Component
One of the primary reasons for the previous mission’s failure was the lack of cold storage facilities, which made it difficult for farmers to store surplus potatoes. Recognizing this, the government has committed to building 58 cold storages in different sub-divisions. This infrastructure is crucial for ensuring that farmers can store and sell their produce at better prices, rather than being forced to sell immediately after harvest, often at a loss.
Long-Term Vision for Self-Sufficiency
With the new strategy, the Odisha government hopes to gradually increase the area under potato cultivation beyond the initial 14,423 hectares. As cold storage facilities are established in more areas, the mission is expected to expand and cover more hectares in the future. The long-term goal is to make Odisha self-sufficient in potato production, reducing the need to rely on neighbouring states for supply.
E-KYC Verification and Additional Benefits
In addition to the focus on potato production, Minister Patra highlighted other significant initiatives. The government has committed to providing fortified rice to all eligible people until 2028 under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). The ongoing e-KYC verification of ration cards, which will ensure accurate distribution of resources, is expected to be completed in the next 10 to 15 days.
