Madhya Pradesh, India’s largest soybean-producing state, has witnessed a sharp decline in wholesale soybean prices during the first week of October 2024. Alongside, the market arrivals of soybeans have significantly reduced compared to last year. In the first seven days of October 2024, only 79,997 tonnes of soybean arrived in various mandis across the state, a sharp 56% drop from the 1,85,194 tonnes recorded during the same period in October 2023.
Price Decline Overview
During the first week of October 2024 (01-08 October), the average wholesale price of soybean in Madhya Pradesh was ₹4,112 per quintal. This marked a 3.93% decline from the previous week (24-30 September 2024), where prices stood at ₹4,280 per quintal. In comparison, prices in the third week of September 2024 (16-23 September) were even higher at ₹4,432 per quintal, showing a steeper 7.22% fall.
Year-on-year, the price of soybeans was ₹4,174 per quintal during the first week of October 2023, slightly higher by 1.49% compared to October 2024. This indicates that prices are trailing below last year’s levels as well.
Price Trend Analysis
According to weekly state-wise price data, soybean prices in Madhya Pradesh have followed a downward trend over the past three weeks:
- First week of October (01-08 Oct 2024): ₹4,112 per quintal
- Last week of September (24-30 Sep 2024): ₹4,280 per quintal
- Third week of September (16-23 Sep 2024): ₹4,432 per quintal
The data reveals a significant price reduction of ₹118 per quintal (2.76%) from the last week of September to the first week of October. When comparing the first week of October to the third week of September, the price has dropped by ₹270 per quintal, marking a notable 6.09% decline.
This continuous price reduction indicates potential market dynamics, such as increased supply or weakened demand, impacting Madhya Pradesh’s soybean sector.

Farmers waiting for MSP
Farmers are reportedly holding back their stock in anticipation of the government beginning its Minimum Support Price (MSP) procurement for soybean soon. They expect to receive better prices once the government initiates MSP-based purchases, at which point they will bring their crops to the market for sale. The Madhya Pradesh government has declared to start purchase of soybean on minimum support price from 25th October and will go on till 31st December.
Year-on-Year Comparison
Comparing soybean prices from the same period last year (first week of October 2023), when they were at ₹4,174 per quintal, the price difference is minimal. The current price of ₹4,162 per quintal reflects a small 0.29% decline. While this year-on-year decrease may seem insignificant, the steady downward trend in the past few weeks raises concerns about the factors influencing soybean prices, especially when compared to other states.
Soybean Price Movements in Other States
- Madhya Pradesh’s sharp decline in soybean prices contrasts with trends observed in neighbouring states, where price changes have been relatively more stable or less pronounced. For example:
- Maharashtra experienced a 2.7% drop, with prices falling from ₹4,414 per quintal to ₹4,295 per quintal.
- Gujarat saw only a slight reduction of 0.05%, with prices decreasing from ₹4,404 per quintal to ₹4,402 per quintal.
- Interestingly, states like Rajasthan and Telangana reported stable or slightly rising soybean prices. In Rajasthan, prices increased by 0.28% during the same period, indicating potential regional variations in supply and demand.
Factors Behind the Decline
Several factors could be contributing to the decline in soybean prices in Madhya Pradesh:
Regional Oversupply: The harvest season might have led to an increase in soybean availability, potentially resulting in an oversupply situation within the state. This would naturally drive prices downward, as excess supply meets static or reduced demand.
Shifting Demand Dynamics: Domestically and internationally, demand for soybeans may have shifted, contributing to price fluctuations. With the global economy still navigating post-pandemic recovery, export demand could be lower than expected, leading to a build-up of unsold stock.
Local Market Pressures
Madhya Pradesh’s dominance in the national soybean market could mean that any significant changes within the state have a broader impact. Traders and farmers alike are closely monitoring the current trend to predict how prices will behave as the harvest progresses.
Broader Market Implications
While the current decline in prices raises concerns, particularly for farmers, it could also be indicative of larger market corrections as supply and demand find equilibrium. The decrease in prices in Madhya Pradesh, coupled with varying trends in other states, suggests that soybean markets across India are responding to localized conditions.
