Government Extends Fortified Rice Distribution Under Welfare Schemes to Combat Malnutrition
In a major push towards tackling malnutrition, the Government of India has announced the nationwide distribution of fortified rice under all welfare schemes until December 2028. This initiative aims to enhance the nutritional value of rice by fortifying it with essential nutrients, including iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12. Programs such as the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) will now exclusively distribute fortified rice, fully funded by the government.

Rice fortification, which began as a pilot project in 15 states in 2020, expanded rapidly, achieving 100% coverage by March 2024.
