Govt. Announces Insurance Coverage for 17 Fruit Crops across 56 Districts
The Maharashtra state government has announced a new fruit crop insurance scheme to support farmers against losses due to unseasonal rain and adverse weather. This scheme will provide insurance cover for eight fruit crops in the ‘Mrig Bahar’ season and nine fruit crops in the ‘Ambia Bahar’ season. According to official sources, the scheme will be rolled out in a total of 56 districts across the state, wherein Mrig Bahar will be applicable in 26 districts and Ambia Bahar in 30 districts, with coverage amounts per hectare that include protection against hail.

Covered Crops and Seasons
Mrig Bahar: Oranges, mangosteens, pomegranates, chickpeas, guavas, lemons, citrons, and grapes.
Ambia Bahar: Oranges, mangosteens, cashews, pomegranates, mangoes, bananas, grapes, strawberries, and papayas (strawberries and papayas are included on an experimental basis).
The scheme will run for the next two years under the Revenue Board’s oversight. It applies only to productive orchards of specified ages: mangoes, chickpeas, and cashew nuts (5 years), lemons (4 years), oranges, citrus fruits, and guavas (3 years), and grapes and pomegranates (2 years).
Premium Subsidy and Coverage Periods
The insurance premium subsidy from the central government is 30%. The state government and farmers will share the remaining cost, with the state covering 5% and the rest split evenly between the government and farmers above 35%.

Fruit insurance coverage details:
- Oranges: Rs 1 lakh for low rainfall from June 15 to July 15, and from July 16 to August 15.
- Mosambi: Rs 1 lakh for low rainfall from July 1 to July 31 and for rain from August 1 to August 31.
- Guavas: Rs 70,000 for low rainfall from June 15 to June 14 and for rain from July 15 to August 15.
- Chickpeas: Rs 70,000 for high humidity and high rainfall from July 1 to September 30.
- Pomegranates: Rs 1.6 lakh for high rainfall from July 15 to October 15, and from October 16 to December 31.
- Lemons: Rs 80,000 for low rainfall from June 15 to July 15.
- Grapes: Rs 3.8 lakh for rain, humidity, and low temperatures from June 15 to November 15.
Climate Risk Measurement
Sources also informed that, a periodic climate risks will also be measured based on deviations of 0.5°C for consecutive days, with compensation provided for both excessive and low temperatures if the deviation persists for three or more consecutive days.
