In a significant move to boost mechanization in the agricultural sector, the Bihar government is providing substantial subsidies on various types of agricultural equipment. This initiative aims to make farming more efficient and less labour-intensive for farmers across the state. To facilitate this, the Bihar government has initiated an online lottery system to allocate agricultural equipment to farmers at subsidized rates. Under this scheme, 75 different types of agricultural equipment will be available to farmers with subsidies ranging from 40 to 80 percent.
Bihar’s Agriculture Minister, Mangal Pandey, officially launched the online lottery process under the Agricultural Mechanization Scheme. During the event, Minister Pandey distributed millet seeds, soil health cards, Agri clinic kits for plant protection, and certificates to farmers trained in beekeeping, among other materials. This event underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity through mechanization and training.
Up to 80 Percent Subsidy on Equipment
Minister Pandey detailed that under the fourth agriculture roadmap, a total of Rs 82.25 crore has been allocated for the Agricultural Mechanization State Scheme for the financial year 2024-25. Additionally, Rs 104.16 crore has been sanctioned under the centrally sponsored Sub Mission on Agricultural Mechanization. The scheme provides subsidies ranging from 40 to 80 percent on agricultural equipment, depending on the type and purpose of the equipment.

The scheme covers a wide array of agricultural tools, including crop residue management equipment like straw reapers, super seeders, happy seeders, reaper cum binders, straw balers, and brush cutters. Small equipment kits such as sickles, hoes, scrapers, table cellars, and weeders are also available for small and marginal farmers.
Moreover, the scheme offers subsidies on 75 types of equipment used before sowing and after harvesting. This includes cultivators, disc harrows, potato planters, paddy transplanters, multi-crop threshers, tea pluckers, potato diggers, makhana popping machines, rice mills, flour mills, chaff cutters, power tillers, and rotavators.
High Farmer Participation
Sanjay Aggarwal, Secretary of the Bihar Agriculture Department, highlighted that the main objective of the Agricultural Mechanization Scheme is to provide farmers with access to advanced agricultural equipment at subsidized rates. This access will enable farmers to perform crop operations more efficiently and increase agricultural productivity. For the first time, the application process for purchasing subsidized agricultural equipment began in April 2024. By June 30, 2024, a total of 77,867 farmers had applied. The allocation of equipment is being conducted through a district-wise lottery system based on physical and financial targets.
In addition to equipment subsidies, the government is also focusing on training farmers in the use of modern equipment and techniques. Programs are being introduced to educate farmers about the benefits of mechanization, proper equipment maintenance, and the efficient use of resources. These efforts are expected to significantly improve the livelihood of farmers, ensuring better crop management and higher returns on their investments.
