In a significant move to strengthen international cooperation in the area of food safety, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) of Brazil. This milestone agreement was formalized during the Global Food Regulators Summit 2024, held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, yesterday. The MoU is set to pave the way for joint projects, technical collaboration, and a shared commitment to improving food safety in both countries. 

Bilateral Ties for Food Safety 

The MoU was signed by Brazil’s Agriculture and Livestock Minister, Mr. Carlos Henrique Baqueta Fávaro, and counter-signed by Mr. G. Kamala Vardhana Rao, CEO of FSSAI. The agreement symbolizes a new phase of cooperation aimed at enhancing food safety standards and ensuring regulatory alignment between India and Brazil. 

Mr. G. Kamala Vardhana Rao expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “Signing this MoU demonstrates our dedication to food safety and signifies a major advancement in our ongoing efforts to enhance international collaboration in food safety. We are eager to work with MAPA to achieve our common goals and enhance food safety in both countries.”

The representative from Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock highlighted the importance of the agreement, noting that it marks a “milestone in the bilateral relations between the two countries.” The MoU will allow for technical cooperation, exchange of expertise, and knowledge-sharing aimed at strengthening institutional collaboration in the area of food safety.
