The Mumbai Milk Producers Association (MMPA) has made an announcement about a big change in the price of wholesale buffalo milk in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Starting from September 1 the price will go up by ₹9 per litre. This means the new rate will be ₹102 per litre up from the ₹93 per litre.
The MMPA says this new pricing will stay in place until February 28 2027. The increase comes after months of rising costs in running cattle sheds and buying feed. These higher expenses have been a challenge, for milk suppliers. Shed operators across Maharashtra. The association says the price adjustment helps support farmers and ensure the milk supply stays stable.
What Factors Driven the Wholesale Milk Price Hike?
The choice to change the milk prices was made at a meeting held by the MMPA in Mumbai. People who work for the association talked about problems with costs that made the price change important:
A 25% Increase in Cattle Feed Prices: The cost of important parts of animal food. Like corn and oil cake meals has gone up by as much as 25%. Which has made the cost of feeding animals every day much higher.
Not Fodder Available: The weather during certain times of the year has made it harder to find fresh green fodder. This means dairy farmers have to buy dry fodder from stores at much higher prices.
More Money Needed to Buy Livestock: Buying cows that give a lot of milk has become more expensive which means more money is needed to keep the farms running and to replace old animals.
Money for Transport: Changes, in fuel prices have made it more expensive to move raw milk from farms to cities every day.
How Will the Price Increase Affect Consumers and Businesses?
The wholesale price increase will cause a rise in the price of loose milk sold at retail and in the costs of making food for business.
Impact on Households: In cities households that drink loose milk will pay about ₹540 more per month for milk when they buy two litres each day.
Impact, on Commercial Buyers: Companies that make sweets, bakeries, tea shops and restaurants that use fresh milk will have to pay more each day for milk.
Pre-Festive Season Pressure: The change happens before big festivals and it will make the cost of producing dairy items higher in the whole area.
What Does This Revision Mean for the Dairy Sector?
While the rise in rates makes it more expensive for people to buy things it helps farmers who raise animals. These farmers have had to deal with increases in the cost of things they need to feed their animals over the last year. People who know a lot, about the farming industry say that keeping prices steady over time will need ways to manage the food for the animals and better machines to process the feed. This will help keep the costs of running the farm lower.
