Malawi Mangoes Arrive Late in Mumbai: Priced at $18 per Box Amid Global Supply Challenges 

Mumbai’s Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) recently received its first shipment of the highly sought-after Malawi mangoes, a South African specialty. These mangoes, priced at approximately $18 (₹1,500) per box, made a delayed entry this year due to extended rains in South Africa, which disrupted the flowering and harvesting schedule. Traditionally available in early November, the late arrival has sparked curiosity and demand in the Indian market. 

The Journey of Malawi Mangoes 

Malawi mangoes have carved a niche for themselves in India since 2018. Cultivated from Alphonso grafts imported from Ratnagiri over 14 years ago, these mangoes are celebrated for their Alphonso-like flavour, making them a premium choice for consumers. To ensure quality, the mangoes undergo hot water treatment, preserving their taste and texture during transit. 

The initial shipment of 945 boxes has been distributed across major cities, including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, and Rajkot. Importer Sanjay Pansare shared that while this year’s crop is smaller in size, the volume is expected to rise steadily with weekly shipments of around 7,000 boxes beginning soon.
