Bihar Government encourage farmers to apply immediately
In a major step to empower farmers and reduce irrigation costs, the Bihar government has launched the “Mukhyamantri Krishi Vidyut Sambandh Yojana.” This scheme aims to replace diesel-powered pump sets with electrically operated ones, providing free electricity connections to 4.80 lakh agricultural pump sets.

Progress So Far: Aiming for Sustainable Irrigation
According to the Bihar Agriculture Department, the state initially had 7.20 lakh diesel-powered pump sets. Under earlier initiatives, 3.60 lakh pumps received electricity connections. Building on this momentum, the Energy Department has identified an additional 1.20 lakh pump sets and set a target to electrify a total of 4.80 lakh by 2026.
In the financial year 2024-25, the government targeted 1.50 lakh connections, of which 1 lakh farmers have already benefited. The remaining 50,000 pump sets are expected to receive connections by March 2025. Additionally, the remaining 1.50 lakh pump sets are scheduled for connection during 2025-26, with the final 1.80 lakh expected to be connected by September 2026.
How Can Farmers Apply?
Farmers interested in availing of the free electricity connections can apply via the Suvidha app, the distribution company’s portal, or their local electricity office. The application process has been simplified, requiring only an Aadhaar card and relevant land documents. Farmers must also include the exact location of the pump set for timely installation.
The government has made these connections entirely free of cost, with no fees payable by farmers. This initiative not only reduces initial expenses but also makes irrigation significantly cheaper. Farmers now pay over 10 times less for electricity-powered irrigation compared to diesel costs, offering substantial savings and environmental benefits.
Benefits of Electrifying Agricultural Pumps
Electrifying agricultural pumps will have far-reaching impacts:
- Cost Efficiency: Farmers save on diesel costs, allowing them to invest in other agricultural inputs.
- Environmental Impact: A shift from diesel to electricity reduces carbon emissions, contributing to a greener environment.
- Increased Productivity: Reliable and affordable irrigation ensures optimal crop growth and boosts yields.
- Ease of Use: Electricity-powered pumps require less maintenance and provide uninterrupted service compared to diesel pumps.
Government’s Call to Action
The Agriculture Department has urged farmers to apply early to benefit from the scheme. Subsidies on electricity bills further lower operational costs, enabling farmers to focus on maximizing their productivity.
Supporting Farmers’ Growth
This initiative is part of Bihar’s broader mission to support farmers by introducing innovative agricultural solutions and schemes. The government continues to promote sustainable practices, aiming to enhance the livelihood of farmers and contribute to food security in the state.
