A 40-Year Partnership in Agriculture
Ambassador Gerards highlighted the longstanding partnership between India and the Netherlands, founded on a Memorandum of Understanding that has guided their agricultural cooperation for over 40 years. She emphasized the Netherlands’ commitment to supporting India’s agricultural progress, especially in horticulture, by sharing Dutch expertise. “Our aim is to harness our experience in agriculture to contribute meaningfully to India’s journey towards agricultural self-sufficiency and sustainability,” Gerards remarked.
Establishment of Centres of Excellence in Agriculture
A major focus of the discussion was the establishment of 24 Centres of Excellence (CoEs) across India, aimed at promoting advancements in horticulture, animal husbandry, and related agricultural sectors. These CoEs, jointly developed with Dutch technical assistance, are intended to elevate agricultural practices and yield in India. Dr. Chaturvedi explained, “Seven of these centres are already operational, producing high-quality planting material and training over 25,000 farmers across India in advanced, sustainable farming techniques.”
Funding for nine of these centres has been secured through the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH), showcasing a shared commitment from both nations to improve agricultural practices. These centres are seen as vital resources, not only for improving crop quality but also for empowering Indian farmers with cutting-edge knowledge and practical skills.
Focus on Customized Farm Machinery
Another key highlight was the joint proposal to develop farm machinery tailored specifically for Indian agricultural needs. Additional Secretary Shri Pramod Kumar Meherda commented on this initiative, noting that such equipment could significantly enhance farming efficiency and promote sustainability. “We aim to develop machinery that aligns with the unique demands of Indian agriculture, making operations more accessible and profitable for Indian farmers,” Meherda said.
Expanding Horizons for Agricultural Cooperation
Beyond existing collaborations, the two countries are exploring additional initiatives in the fields of greenhouse cultivation, water management, and dairy farming. With India’s agriculture sector rapidly evolving, these efforts aim to address challenges related to climate change, water conservation, and food security. Ambassador Gerards stressed the Netherlands’ enthusiasm to work alongside India in these areas, given the Netherlands’ global reputation as a leader in sustainable and innovative agricultural practices.
Government Support and Positive Outcomes
The Indian government has shown strong support for the India-Netherlands partnership, with officials from both nations recognizing the potential for these initiatives to create long-lasting benefits for India’s agricultural sector. This collaboration aligns with India’s larger goal of doubling farmers’ income and enhancing food security by introducing high-value crops, efficient water use technologies, and sustainable farming techniques.
The meeting underscored a renewed optimism about the future of Indo-Dutch agricultural collaboration, with both nations pledging continued support and investment.
