His risk paid off, and today, he is earning lakhs of rupees annually from his date crops, inspiring other farmers in the region to follow his path.

According to media reports, Sanjay Bhai transitioned to horticulture eight years ago, particularly focusing on cultivating dates. His farm now boasts 120 date palms trees spread over one hectare of land. These trees are of an Israeli variety, renowned for their quality and yield. Each tree produces between 100 to 150 kilograms of dates per harvest, and the market value of his total produce is estimated at an impressive ₹18 lakh per year. After deducting farming expenses and labor costs, his net profit amounts to a substantial ₹10 lakh annually.

Inspiration from Kutch: The Seed of Success

Sanjay Bhai’s journey into date farming was sparked during a visit to the Kutch district, which is widely regarded as a hub for date cultivation in India. While in Kutch, he saw the potential of date farming firsthand, learning from the experiences of local farmers. Inspired by their success, he decided to bring the same practice to Amreli. With a forward-thinking approach and the determination to break away from traditional farming, he planted 120 date saplings on his land.

To kickstart his venture, Sanjay Bhai also benefited from government support. He received a subsidy of ₹16,000, which played a crucial role in covering initial expenses. The financial aid from the government, combined with his personal determination, helped him successfully establish his date farm.

Government Support and the Rise of Date Farming in Gujarat

The success story of Sanjay Bhai Dobariya is part of a larger trend in Gujarat, where many farmers are now embracing horticulture as a profitable business model. Date palms farming, in particular, has become increasingly popular, especially in the Kutch district, which leads the state in date production. The state government, along with the agriculture department, is actively encouraging farmers to diversify into horticultural crops, offering subsidies and grants to make the transition easier.

In the Amreli district alone, over 50 hectares of land have now been dedicated to date farming, a number that continues to grow as more farmers recognize the financial potential of horticulture. The government provides substantial financial support, with grants helping farmers earn up to ₹2 lakh per hectare from date cultivation.
