According to the report, to provide good nourishments and better supplements in the dairy products, an appeal of zero tax on the dairy products like ghee, butter, paneer from the current 12 % Goods and Services Tax (GST).
Indian Dairy Association (IDA) approached the Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman appealing from current GST of 12% to 0 % on dairy products like ghee, butter, and paneer. In the current scenario, unpacked paneer is sold without GST, on the other hand, Packed paneer sold with 12% GST. “The center is spending a great deal on nourishment security. Ghee and paneer are a rich wellspring of sustenance," said GS Rajorhia, President, IDA.”
The dairy sector has raised the issue of liquidating skimmed milk powder stocks that had piled up during the lockdown period.
Also making dairy farming attractive and competitive, by reducing GST input costs will be brought down. Rajorhia said that “Today we have SMP stocks of about 2 lakh tonnes in the country. To liquidate this stock in the international market, we need government support with no export duty levied on it. Let everyone be given an opportunity to find their market. And we don’t want it permanently but for a year by when we can clear the stock.”
Rs 3,289 crore fund allocated for the animal husbandry and dairy by the Finance Minister. Though, Rs 1.34 Lac crore was received by the Department of Agriculture, Cooperation, and Farmers Welfare.
"Livestock or animal husbandry is no longer just an allied activity. It is a major source of income for landless and marginal farmers. Of about 100 million people connected to livestock, about 80 percent. are landless and marginal rural Indian families. But the majority of agriculture resources are going to land-owner farmers. This has to be corrected to whatever extent possible,” Sodhi added.
There is also a major concern on the issue of long overdue income tax liability on dairy farmers, whereas there is no income tax for the landowner agriculture farmers. Sodhi also added that “Today, there is a lot of distress in the rural sector and agriculture space, but if the resources are made available the livestock sector can improve the livelihood of rural India. This is because marketing is not a problem. The market is constantly growing,” Sodhi added.
